Why Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Sucked

We've all seen the Phantom Menace. We were all disappointed by it on some level. This guy was disappointed enough to make a feature length review, 7 parts of 10 minutes each, explaining exactly why the movie wasn't good. At least watch the first video. If you aren't interested after that, then don't bother with the rest of them. Although with this crowd, I expect a fairly high retention rate.

Page with all 7 videos.

The A Team...

In 2006 a crack commando unit of beer drinkers was in need of a costume for a Halloween party and contest that they didn't commit, these men promptly drank maximum amounts of alcohol at the Sky Rock underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as beer drinkers of fortune. If you have a problem or free booze- If no one else can help and you have party snacks- and if you can find them, again don't forget the free booze - maybe you can hire the A-Team.

All I need to know I learned from Tecmo Super Bowl

Just in case you forgot the best video game ever!

http://www.cbssports.com/spin/story/10078985

Best ones (I added the stuff in parentheses):

21. When something isn't working, just blow it ... wait(--aka, sexual advice that women should follow.)

44.
If you break something, you must pay for the breakage. Ergo, if you just fumbled and some fat guy on the other team just returned a fumble the entire length of the field and you broke the controller ... well, you have to buy a new one.
(--This one is to remind Boese and Curtis of our infamous PS2 Madden battles.)

46. Just because girls wink at you doesn't mean they like you. In fact, it may actually be part of their job. Remembering this will literally save you 1.62 million dollars over the course of your life.(--especially in strip clubs.)

A study has been done that says cats can manipulate humans with their high pitched meows. In other shocking news, Michael Jackson is still dead. What, too soon?

Thursday, July 2, 2009

It's July...too early to think about Fantasy Football?

Yeah that's right. The NFL season is still 2 months off, so it may be early to think about fantasy football. Or you could say...it's only 2 short months away, I barely have time to prepare for my fantasy football dominance.

Anyway, I'll be sending out emails about fantasy football soon. I'm going to create a 12-team, 3 division league, with a $50 entry fee this year. You'd be able to trade future draft picks/auction money, so I would expect owners to return year after year. However, I don't envision using keepers.

Oh, I'm also refusing to sign up for a pay site to host this. That's idiotic since there are so many free sites offering all the same options, and the entry money could be better spent distributed as prize money.

I'll be sending the word out soon enough. Please use the comments to let me know:

a) If you'd be interested
b) Any recommendations for websites
c) If there's anybody else who might be willing to participate. Preferably someone local, who isn't very good at this. :)

Local Beer Blog

This guy has a blog dedicated to beer in Baltimore. Thought some of you might enjoy reading about local brews.

Save the Coconuts

Our buddy from Broadneck High Justin Brill is putting on a show at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre to benefit the Save the Coconuts organization. It is a local Annapolis organization that promotes breast cancer awareness and raises funds for research. Apparently Justin's own mother has already had two bouts with the terrible disease. I thought it would be nice if some of us might be interested in going to this special show. It will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 8:30pm with a reception to follow. The rain date is Monday July 27.

My post seems to be premature. Mrs. Brill actually passed away this past Sunday 6/14. I think the viewings are today 6/18 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Barranco Funeral Home in Severna Park. The funeral service is today 6/19 at 11:30 am.

I stopped by the 2-4 viewing yesterday to give Justin our condolences. He says hello to everyone. He seems to be doing well. Justin is engaged and his fiancee is very nice.

Misspellings and Hilarity Ensue

This morning I found a blog dedicated to compiling one-star reviews of classic movies, books, and music from Amazon.com.

Some gems:
  • There are many myths that persist in modern life. One myth is that war is “meaningless”, “useless” or “insane.” Another myth is that Catch-22 is a good book.
  • The Princess Bride is twenty years old, and after twenty years it’s difficult to see why anyone likes this movie. It is not realistic and most of the things that happen in the story are lies. The Princess Bride is about two guys who are in a book and they’re fighting over a princess named Buttercup. But the problem is that one of them is a pirate and the other one is a giant! I know it’s supposed to be fictional…but come on! Even my suspension of disbelief is not that good, and I work with children!
  • The entire story [of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] can be summed up in one sentence: The Earth is destroyed, and Arthur is saved by Ford Prefect, who is an alien researching Earth. Woo, what an exciting plot. Honestly, I’d rather be on the Earth when it was destroyed than go on this boring adventure.
  • Pink Floyd [The Dark Side of the Moon]! Holy Christ, they’re the worst band EVER! I mean EVER! OH MY GOD! GROTESQUE! THEY’RE HORRID! WOW! MAKE THEM DIE ALREADY! GO CREED! GO CREED! GO CREED!
  • THIS [Blazing Saddles] is Mel Brook’s WORST movie ever. I think it’s sad how so many great actors would’ve been in it, but THAT was then. Usually EVERYTIME I read a review on Amazon, at least ONE [or two] people give any item “1 star”, but I’m disgusted to find so many [rednecks?] giving this piece of trash “5 stars”.
  • I do not like the Wizard of Oz. For one thing, I don’t like to watch things with witches in them, especially if one of them is portrayed as a “good witch” - that’s an oxymoron I can’t reconcile with.
  • I mean when I watch Casablanca and I here the gun shot at the end, I want to HERE GUN SHOT AT THE END!!! Also Ingrid Bergman is no Maryland Monroe.

And easily my favorite, about Schindler's List:

  • Hey don’t get me wrong I like Holocaust movies as much as the next guy , but this one was a real let down. First of all there are no Americans(at least not American characters)hey spielzy what gives, wheres are hero, schindler is no indiana jones. Perhaps he should of handed the script over to michael cricton.I think spielberg is our greatest “dreamweaver”, to quote someone else, but this film has no pizazz, or more importantly no color. plus it doesn’t have any great action scenes or excitement like saving private ryan. I guess the holocaust is a good topic to make a movie about, but brother this movie aint no “hook”. hopefully people will forget about this turkey and pay more attention to stephen’s better work, ‘amistad’ ‘field of dreams’ ‘ the lost world’.

You can read minds?

The Washington Post has a story about a new wave of toys about to hit the market. Oh and they work by using mind control to move objects. Then they talk about all the practical applications, and at the end they have a great suggestion about what should come next.

Greatest. Concert. Ever.

Several of us went to the Jonathan Coulton w/ Paul and Storm show last night. I've made posts about JoCo in the past but none about Paul and Storm per se. Both JoCo and Paul & Storm are alumni of Song Fu and both put on one of the best shows I have been to in a long time. Go see one or both of them next time they come through if you enjoy music that is both fun, funny, and performed by guys in jeans and Homestar Runner t-shirts that sound as good live as on CD.

Enthusiastic Arrr!

As promised to those at the concert, a link to songs for the Song Fu challenge done in the style of their opponent.

JoePa's statue gets Lasik

Penn State police are looking out for Joe Paterno's Coke bottle-thick glasses -- the bronzed ones that were perched on the statue of the iconic football coach that stands outside Beaver Stadium.

Vandals apparently cut the glasses off just above the base of the ears of the 7-foot sculpture between 11 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, when a police officer noticed the damage.

Some atheists in London responded to a religious group's bus advertising campaign by starting their own advertising campaign. Hilarity ensues.

Flip Cup

I think some BSSC members have officially taken their obsession with Flip Cup too far. If you're really into flip cup, it's actually a pretty good deal: $60 for a few weeks of flip cup.

That said, I've always thought of flip cup as a fun distraction that may or may not occur after we've played sports. Hell, I'm up for just playing flip cup exclusivly at some of the BSSC sponsored events once a year or so. But to pay money to play flip cup week in, week out? Meh...
